Ever the one to reflect, I’m a few days into a new decade and can’t help but think back over the one I’ve just left.
Back in the autumn I was planting bulbs in my lawn, not knowing whether they grow or if the squirrels would steal them – and I found a quiet joy in the fact I wouldn’t know until the winter was over.
This is what my twenties has taught me – life is about burying things to grow, learning, trusting and waiting.
Sometimes things get stolen for no apparent reason, or things that you thought would grow appear to disappear – and yet things you’d forgotten about can burst forth, sometimes the waiting means the flowers end up being brighter than you’d ever imagined.
And the fact is, I’m not sure you can plant too much – as we faithfully plant and bury – over time, the right things grow, the Gardener knows when and how, and even in the most barren of winters never leaves the garden.
So here’s to a new decade…to planting, waiting and enjoying.
