‘Let’s go and see’ Shepherds | Advent #3

December 15, 2021

My friends and I have a Whatsapp group, we use it for keeping in touch, catching up on the mundane moments in life. We know that there will be days we can’t all reply straight away or bits of conversation might pass us by… and yet – ‘free for a call?’ – well that means big news.
News worth being interrupted for – it means, ‘ absolutely get yourself in a place where you can answer in the next five minutes because you won’t want to miss this.’

How do you respond to good news? News that’s worth being interrupted for?

The shepherds didn’t get a notification warning, they didn’t get the luxury of preparation for the news. It was just a normal night in the field and suddenly they were interrupted – the quiet, the darkness, the mundane – all interrupted for ‘good news of great joy’.

And though they were terrified, the Bible says, which seems a fairly reasonable reaction, they’re responding with enthusiasm and excitement.

‘Let’s go and see.’

There was not a hint of apathy in sight, no ‘oh I’m sure we could go tomorrow’ or ‘are you sure’ – their response to the interruption was of intrigue and involvement.

‘Free for a call?’ – I wouldn’t miss those moments for the world – and I think the shepherds knew it was the same. Get involved, move your diary around, drop everything.

Because you don’t want to miss this.
