Navigating Life’s Bumps | Navigate Part 5

September 5, 2023

Welcome back to another session of the Navigate Programme blog series! Our journey of self-discovery, growth, and personal transformation continues as we explore the depths of our unique gifts and the profound impact they can have on the world around us. In our previous session, we embarked on a quest to understand the essence of belonging, trust, and vulnerability. We learned that belonging is a journey marked by authenticity and trust, and it’s a foundation that propels us towards personal growth and lasting connections. This content was first written as sessions that were intended to be done in groups within organisations, charities and churches. You can read more about the history and beginnings of Navigate here. Each session is written to equip individuals and groups to navigate life’s complex journey. This blog series is our way of giving you a taster of this content and an insight into what Navigate is all about. If you think Navigate might be useful in your context, do let us know.

As we step into Session 5, get ready to explore the road we’ve travelled so far, acknowledge the bumps that have shaped us, and gain insights into how our mindset can lead us towards a brighter future.

Signpost 5: We All Experience Bumps in the Road

In the last leg of our journey, we took a deep dive into the world of our own uniqueness and the incredible impact our gifts can have. Now, let’s shift our focus to a new signpost: “We All Experience Bumps in the Road.” Just before we set out, let’s kick things off with a thought-provoking question: Do you have a memory from your past that brings you joy? This question isn’t just an icebreaker—it paves the way for us to explore the twists and turns that life throws our way.

Over the past four sessions, we’ve been on a mission to understand our current state, embrace change, and develop new beliefs that propel us forward. Now, as we delve into these next four sessions, our journey takes an introspective turn. We’re about to journey into the heart of our own stories, recognizing the path that led us here, reflecting on the bumps we’ve encountered along the way, and discovering how our mindset and habits shape our journey ahead.

Today, we set out on a voyage of introspection. Let’s take a moment to recognize the road we’ve traversed to reach this point in our lives. Have you ever found yourself in one of these thought patterns?

“I’m all alone, and no one understands my pain.”
“Others have faced worse challenges, so I shouldn’t complain about my struggles.”

The truth is, every individual faces their own set of difficulties and hardships. Comparing our experiences doesn’t help us navigate our bumps—it simply leaves us stuck in a cycle of unproductive thoughts.

Reflecting on our past can evoke a range of emotions—anger, fear, shame. These feelings often hold us captive, hindering our progress. Remember, just like a child sharing their fear of a monster in the cupboard with a parent, we can free ourselves by sharing our feelings with trusted friends or professionals who can guide us through the process. Trust is key as we embark on this journey of healing and self-discovery.

Dealing with our past might also stir up anger or bitterness due to disappointments and hurts. These feelings are valid, but allowing them to hold us back is not. To overcome, we must acknowledge our anger and seek healthier ways to process it. By addressing our emotions and finding constructive ways to manage them, we can triumph over the shadows that seek to hinder us.

As we embark on this leg of the journey, remember that every bump in the road is an opportunity for growth, every twist and turn a chance to uncover new perspectives. We’ll continue to explore the depths of our stories, acknowledging our past while focusing on the transformational road ahead. Stay tuned for our next session, where we’ll uncover a profound truth: “We Can Be Kind to Ourselves.”
