Cultivating Self-Kindness | Navigate Part 6

September 5, 2023

Welcome back to another session of the Navigate Programme blog series! Our journey of self-discovery, growth, and personal transformation continues as we explore the depths of our unique gifts and the profound impact they can have on the world around us. In our previous session, we embarked on a quest to understand the essence of belonging, trust, and vulnerability. We learned that belonging is a journey marked by authenticity and trust, and it’s a foundation that propels us towards personal growth and lasting connections. This content was first written as sessions that were intended to be done in groups within organisations, charities and churches. You can read more about the history and beginnings of Navigate here. Each session is written to equip individuals and groups to navigate life’s complex journey. This blog series is our way of giving you a taster of this content and an insight into what Navigate is all about. If you think Navigate might be useful in your context, do let us know.

Today, our compass points toward a profound truth: “We Can Be Kind to Ourselves.” As we venture further, we’ll explore how to confront the challenges of our past, assess our mindset, and shift our perspectives to embrace a brighter future.

Signpost 6: We Can Be Kind to Ourselves

Recall our voyage from the initial session up to now—a voyage of introspection, growth, and self-discovery. As we set our sights on this week’s destination, remember our guiding principle: “We Can Be Kind to Ourselves.” But before we hit the road, let’s start with a question that echoes our journey preparations: How do you get ready for a journey? Do you meticulously plan or embrace spontaneity?

In our trek through life’s landscapes, we often encounter moments that shape us. Last week, we began to unpack our past, examining the bumps that have paved our path. But today, our focus shifts. We’re about to explore a pivotal theme: How do we confront the experiences that may hinder our progress? How can we reframe our mindsets and habits, transforming them into vehicles for growth?

Imagine yourself on an orienteering expedition. Just as we navigate maps, we’re invited to navigate our stories, a process Brene Brown terms “reckoning.” It’s about acknowledging our hurts, struggles, and pains. Brown asserts that ignoring these feelings only nurtures negativity, affecting our relationships, careers, and overall well-being.

Blame—a weighty emotion that can hold us captive. Our narratives often shift blame onto ourselves, others, or circumstances. To confront this, let’s journey through a thought-provoking video on blame. How did it make you feel? Could you recognize the places, people, or even yourself that you blame? As we delve into the realm of reckoning, remember that this path might be challenging. Confronting our stories and blame isn’t always easy. But amid the process, let’s be gentle with ourselves. Remember, kindness is essential. Let’s nurture ourselves, banishing self-criticism, and paving the way for healing.

As we embark on this leg of the journey, remember that every bump in the road is an opportunity for growth, every twist and turn a chance to uncover new perspectives. We’ll continue to explore the depths of our stories, acknowledging our past while focusing on the transformational road ahead. In the next post, we’ll look at adopting a new mindset. Stay tuned!
